Effect of different concentrations of benzilaminopurine (BAP) on the in vitro establishment of pitahaya (Hylocereus guatemalensis)

Abstract

The growing interest in the cultivation of pitahaya has allowed the propagation of cuttings of different varieties promoting their commercialization at national and international level, being required to ensure the phytosanitary quality and the massive propagation in less time of said crop. Therefore, in the present study, through the in vitro culture technique, the effect of four concentrations of the growth regulator BAP (Benzylaminopurine) and a control on the in vitro establishment stage in explants from areolas of Hylocereus guatemalensis was evaluated, commonly known as American Beauty. A total of 60 sample units were used, evaluated for a period of three months. The highest sprouting percentage was obtained in a minimum period of 30 days with a concentration of 0.5 mg/l of BAP, in addition, regarding the length of cladodes, this concentration allowed to obtain the greatest length with an average of 22.92 mm, establishing significant differences with the other treatments used. The highest number of areoles per cladode was obtained with the treatments 0.5 mg/l and 1 mg/l of BAP, respectively. After successfully passing the establishment stage, the present investigation will allow to continue with the studies related to the plant micropropagation of the crop.
